Taking photos of birds in flight is both rewarding and exciting, but it requires patience, and there is no surefire method. If all birds were ospreys—which fly slowly and stand out clearly against a clear sky—it would be easier.

But try photographing a puffin flying at 80 km/h against a dark landscape in diffused light! The capabilities of your camera and lens, as well as the birds’ different flying styles and speeds, the impact of their plumage on autofocus, the brightness of the light, and the varied backgrounds—all these factors, and many more, can make photographing birds in flight challenging and, at times, frustrating. But don’t get discouraged! Try these tips and best practices—they’ll help you get started with photographing birds in motion.

Primero, Prepara Tu Tiro.

First, Set Up Your Shot. Take advantage of the wind and the sunlight behind you: If you plan to photograph birds in flight, choose a time and place where the sun is behind you and the wind is blowing toward your face. Birds usually fly into the wind, and when they approach you at an angle, they’re in the best position for you to capture stunning shots:

with their lower wings clearly visible and their heads facing forward. When flying into the wind, they move more slowly, which makes it easier to track their flight; plus, having the sun behind you provides good lighting. Identify expected flight paths: By understanding the birds’ behavior, you can pinpoint areas where they tend to fly—especially in large numbers—which will give you plenty of opportunities to practice and get the perfect shot. Photographing birds in flight often comes down to quantity, so the more you capture, the better!

Is there a specific place that brown pelicans or Canada geese always fly to when they return to their roosts each afternoon? Is there a ridge that hawks follow during their fall migration?

A Continuación, Ajusta Los Parámetros De Tu Cámara.

Shooting with a clear background: The autofocus system will work best if the background is simple and low-contrast, such as the sky or a calm lake. If this isn't possible, keep in mind that a more distant background is preferable. A forest in the distance works much better than having trees directly behind the bird. Next, adjust your camera settings.

Focus Using the Shutter Button: Although I often recommend using the rear button to focus, avoid doing so when photographing birds in flight. Since you’ll be constantly in focus while shooting, you’ll find it more comfortable to press the shutter button halfway to focus and then press it all the way down to take the photo, rather than holding down two buttons at the same time.

Use the focus limiter: Set the focus limiter so that it does not recognize nearby objects. This can speed up the autofocus system, as it can skip part of the lens's range. Turn off image stabilization: When photographing birds in flight, you’ll be using shutter speeds that make image stabilization unnecessary. Turning it on could make it harder to track subjects and reduce the lens’s performance.

Set your camera settings in advance: When photographing the flight, generally use manual exposure mode and adjust the aperture and shutter speed beforehand. This usually involves shooting at the lens’s widest aperture and choosing an ISO that allows for an appropriate shutter speed. The shutter speed should be fast: 1/2500, 1/3200, or even faster, if lighting conditions permit.

If light is low or if you're photographing subjects that move slowly, reduce the shutter speed to 1/1600 or 1/1250 if necessary, although you may end up with a lower percentage of sharp images. If you can use the ideal shutter speed and there’s more light, try stopping down the aperture from its widest setting to f/5.6 or f/8 to achieve greater depth of field and a better chance of keeping all the important parts of the bird in focus: the head, body, and front wings. Also, set the camera to the highest frame rate.

In situations with uniform lighting, shooting in manual mode means that the background may vary, but the bird’s exposure will remain constant. Imagine photographing a sandhill crane flying over a field. In one of the automatic exposure modes, this would change the exposure and could reduce the shutter speed to an unacceptable level. If the exposure is set in manual mode, nothing will change, and the bird will remain properly exposed against any background, as long as it’s under the same lighting conditions.

When photographing birds against a white or very bright sky, consider using the sky as a guide for exposure and adjust it as much as possible without overexposing any part of the bird. I usually meter the light from the sky and open the aperture by 2 or 2 1/3 stops.

Choose your autofocus setting: for large birds, use a single autofocus point to place it exactly where you want it. If this becomes difficult, switch to one of the camera’s autofocus patterns. On Nikon cameras, Group Area AF GrP is an excellent option when photographing birds in flight. On Canon cameras, I prefer to use a 9-point pattern or zone autofocus.

An additional feature in the latest Canon cameras is the ability to customize the autofocus settings. I suggest creating a custom setting tailored for moving birds: set the tracking sensitivity to -2 a setting of -1 or 0 might be preferable for light backgrounds , set the acceleration/deceleration tracking to +2, and set the automatic AF point switching to +2.
