Cefalù, the charming fishing village in Sicily Today I spent the day in Cefalù, a small coastal town in Sicily that’s an hour by train from Palermo. Usually, when I stay in a city for several days, I look for interesting places nearby and take the opportunity to go on day trips or half-day excursions. I’ve read that Cefalù is one of the most beautiful fishing villages in Sicily, though also one of the most visited places during the holidays. So, off I went!

A Brief History Cefalù is a fishing village with long stretches of golden sandy beaches. Although the exact date of its founding is unknown, it is believed to have Phoenician origins and to have been inhabited by the Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans. The Normans left behind several landmarks, such as the 12th-century Cefalù Cathedral, one of the region’s most significant buildings. The historic center also features other structures from the medieval period, including Baroque churches and noble palaces.

The village is located next to La Rocca, a large rock that supports a fortress and the Temple of Diana, both dating from the 9th century B.C.

Today, Cefalù has a population of nearly 14,000, and in the summer, the population doubles due to the influx of tourists. Although it stretches along a large part of the coast, the urban area is concentrated in the eastern part, as can be seen on this map: While researching interesting facts about Cefalù, I discovered that the coat of arms represents the city’s traditions: three fish on a blue background like the sea, symbolizing the fishing tradition; surrounding a loaf of bread, which represents the economy;

and all beneath the figure of Christ Pantocrator, who blesses with his right hand, symbolizing religion. Trains run from Palermo to Cefalù approximately every hour. You can buy tickets at the Trenitalia machines or at the ticket counter. Each one-way trip costs €5.60, so a round trip will cost €11.20. The journey takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the type of train you choose. As usual, you must validate your ticket before boarding the train to activate it.

I suggest that, if you decide to buy the tickets at the counter, you make sure they charge you the correct amount. I bought mine there, and the clerk tried to overcharge me by €1. It could have been a mistake, but unfortunately, it’s common for them to try to rip off tourists and make them pay more. Therefore, in any case, it’s always a good idea to check your payments and change.

En el tren hacía mucho calor y estaba lleno de turistas. Las ventanillas estaban cerradas y no se podían abrir. Cuando ya casi estábamos llegando a Cefalú, apareció un empleado para solucionarlo. ¡Al menos pudimos disfrutar de aire fresco en los últimos minutos! Creo que casi la mitad de los que estábamos en el tren bajamos en Cefalú, y fue en ese momento cuando empecé a notar la cantidad de gente que había.

It was very hot on the train, and it was packed with tourists. The windows were closed and couldn't be opened. Just as we were about to arrive in Cefalù, a crew member came by to fix the problem. At least we got to enjoy some fresh air in the final minutes! I think almost half of the people on the train got off at Cefalù, and that's when I started to notice just how crowded it was.

Corso Ruggero, the main street It’s very easy to get from the station to the center. The route is clearly marked, and right outside the station there’s a large map of Cefalù showing the points of interest. I just followed the crowd, since we were all heading in the same direction.

La primera parada fue en Corso Ruggero. Esta es la vía principal y durante la Edad Media marcaba los límites de la ciudad. Our first stop was on Corso Ruggero. This is the main street, and during the Middle Ages it marked the city limits. Today, you can see stately palaces, Baroque churches, a theater, and a variety of shops, ranging from souvenir stores to clothing boutiques and elegant boutiques. Al seguir por Corso Ruggero, llegué a la Piazza del Duomo, una plaza muy tranquila y agradable. A pesar del intenso calor, había varios lugares con terrazas donde se podía tomar algo y resguardarse del sol. Justo enfrente se encontraba la Catedral de Cefalú, una de las primeras obras de la cultura árabe-normanda en Sicilia. Continuing along Corso Ruggero, I arrived at Piazza del Duomo, a very quiet and pleasant square. Despite the intense heat, there were several places with outdoor seating where you could have a drink and get out of the sun. Right across from it stood the Cefalù Cathedral, one of the earliest examples of Arab-Norman architecture in Sicily. Construction began in 1131, and it was completed before the cathedrals of Monreale and Palermo.

Está rodeada de palacios aristocráticos y del Monasterio de Santa Caterina, que hoy funciona como ayuntamiento. Curiosamente, a diferencia de otras catedrales, la de Cefalú no se terminó en su época. Se fue completando a lo largo de los siglos, y de hecho, en la actualidad todavía hay partes sin adornos. Otra característica de esta catedral es que fue edificada como panteón para la familia real, pero al final, los herederos del rey decidieron darle los honores a la catedral de Palermo.

It is surrounded by aristocratic palaces and the Monastery of Santa Caterina, which today serves as the town hall. Interestingly, unlike other cathedrals, the one in Cefalù was not completed during its original construction period. It was gradually finished over the centuries, and in fact, there are still parts of it today that remain unadorned. Another distinctive feature of this cathedral is that it was built as a mausoleum for the royal family, but in the end, the king’s heirs decided to bestow that honor on the cathedral in Palermo.

A stroll along the coast via the steps Then I returned to the main street and started exploring the side streets to get away from the crowds a bit. It turned out to be a good decision, because I found a charming little spot in Cefalù.

It is a trail that winds through the rocks along the coast, offering views of the sea and the surrounding landscape. To get there, you need to go down a set of stairs that are somewhat hidden and lead directly to the trail among the rocks.

A lo largo del camino, a la derecha, hay pequeñas casas cuyas ventanas dan al mar. ¡Debe ser un verdadero lujo despertarse cada mañana disfrutando de esas vistas impresionantes! Aunque es un pueblo turístico, considero que este sendero es bastante poco conocido. No había nadie más, excepto yo, solo una pareja que también bajó por curiosidad. El camino finaliza en el faro, desde donde puedes subir de nuevo a la calle normal.

Along the path, on the right, there are small houses with windows overlooking the sea. It must be a real treat to wake up every morning to those breathtaking views! Although it’s a tourist town, I think this trail is fairly unknown. There was no one else there except me—just a couple who also came down out of curiosity. The path ends at the lighthouse, from where you can climb back up to the main street.

Si no quieres ir por las rocas, también tienes la opción de caminar por la acera en la parte alta, junto a la carretera. Para regresar al centro de Cefalú, tomé esta ruta, para variar un poco. Cuando viajo, prefiero no volver por el mismo camino si puedo evitarlo. ¡Siempre descubres algo nuevo al probar diferentes alternativas!

If you don't want to walk over the rocks, you can also walk along the sidewalk on the upper part, next to the road. To get back to the center of Cefalù, I took this route for a change. When I travel, I prefer not to take the same route back if I can help it. You always discover something new when you try different options!

En la Via Vittorio Emanuele, vi un acceso que conducía al antiguo lavadero «Fiume Cefalino», que suministraba agua a la ciudad. Al parecer, había un río subterráneo del cual se hacía uso.

On Via Vittorio Emanuele, I saw an entrance leading to the old “Fiume Cefalino” washhouse, which supplied water to the city. Apparently, there was an underground river that was used for this purpose.
