You could explore the entire Mediterranean coast in search of the perfect rural village, surrounded by vineyards and steeped in tradition, and you won’t find a more satisfying getaway than the tiny village of Vernazza, which is my favorite among the five villages that make up the Cinque Terre in Italy.
The Cinque Terre consists of five villages clinging to a narrow stretch of rugged coastline between Genoa and Pisa. This secluded stretch of the Italian Riviera was cut off from the modern world for a long time and only became more accessible with the arrival of the train.
Of the five villages in Cinque Terre, Vernazza is my favorite, with its ruined castle and ancient church. The train that occasionally emerges from the mountain tunnels is the only sign that modern life still exists somewhere. It is a close-knit community that has depended on the sea for years and, in the last generation, also on tourists who love the sea.
The church bells chime at a leisurely pace. Yellow fishing nets, tables with umbrellas, children with plastic shovels, and a fleet of small boats moored to buoys add a splash of color to the scene. And accompanying all of this is the soothing murmur of children at play, happy diners, and the gentle lapping of the waves.
Vernazza’s only street connects the harbor with the train station before disappearing into the vineyards. Like veins on a vine leaf, paths and stairways branch off from the main street and wind through this cluster of houses—which resemble a mosaic—until they vanish among the vines rising high above. Laundry flutters in the breeze as if trying to scare away the stout old women peering out from the old doorways. At the top of the village, the narrow access road to Vernazza ends at a post, a dead-end for cars.
No cars enter this community of 600 residents except on Tuesday mornings, when a few vehicles gather for a flea market, adding a little to the sparse commercial activity . Just as the breakwater holds back the waves in the lower part of the village, the gate keeps modernity at bay in the upper part. However, the village castle no longer says, “No Trespassing.” The breakwater is now a wide, inviting sidewalk surrounded by rocks that juts out into the sea like a finger beckoning to the excursion boats in the distance.
This quaint village is clustered around its pebble cove, where locals with sun-kissed faces relax on the benches and tourists sunbathe on the rocks. In the summer, the beach turns into a soccer field, where teams made up of staff from local bars and restaurants provide evening entertainment. The cove resembles a natural harbor in the Cinque Terre.
In medieval times, the water reached the buildings, where boats were moored just as they are in Venice. Although Vernazza’s fishing fleet has dwindled to just a few boats, it is more common for residents to own a boat than a car. These boats are tied to buoys, except in winter or when the red flag is flying to warn of bad weather. In that case, they are moved to the small harbor square, which is usually used for restaurant tables.
