Taormina, a charming tourist destination. Let’s change course! Today I left Catania to explore one of the places I was most eager to visit: Taormina.

Sin embargo, mientras conversaba con otros viajeros, me sugirieron que me quedara en Giardini Naxos, una localidad cercana a Taormina, pero más tranquila, asequible y menos concurrida.

Taormina, a charming tourist destination. Let’s change course! Today I left Catania to explore one of the places I was most eager to visit: Taormina. However, while chatting with other travelers, they suggested I stay in Giardini Naxos, a town near Taormina that’s quieter, more affordable, and less crowded.

La mejor parte es que mi amigo Guido no tenía planes definidos y se unió a mí. No había hecho una reserva de alojamiento ni nada similar, pero comentó que preguntaría en el hostal donde se hospedaron Gaël y yo si tenían disponibilidad para una tercera persona. ¡Modo aventura total!

The best part is that my friend Guido didn't have any set plans and decided to join me. He hadn't booked a place to stay or anything like that, but he said he'd ask at the hostel where Gaël and I were staying to see if they had room for a third person. Total adventure mode!

Starting the morning off on a relaxed note After yesterday’s trip to Mount Etna, we woke up pretty tired this morning, so we decided to take it easy. So much so that Guido and I missed the train to Taormina right in front of us…

Llegamos a la estación de Catania, compramos los billetes lo más rápido que pudimos, los validamos y, cuando llegamos al tren y presioné el botón para abrir las puertas. . . simplemente no me hizo caso. El tren arrancó y se marchó. Queríamos tomar el de las 11, ya que el siguiente era un Intercity, que es más veloz, pero también el doble de caro. Así somos de cuidadosos con el dinero.

We arrived at the Catania station, bought our tickets as quickly as we could, validated them, and when we got to the train and I pressed the button to open the doors... it just didn't respond. The train pulled away and left. We wanted to take the 11 o’clock train, since the next one was an Intercity, which is faster but also twice as expensive. That’s how careful we are with money.

Decidimos esperar y tomar el siguiente tren, que era un servicio normal. Fuimos al bar de al lado para disfrutar de un café "a precio turístico", como decía Guido. Luego, a las 12:20h, abordamos el tren hacia Taormina/Giardini Naxos. El billete nos costó 4,30€ cada uno.

We decided to wait and take the next train, which was a regular service. We went to the bar next door to enjoy a coffee “at tourist prices,” as Guido put it. Then, at 12:20 p.m., we boarded the train to Taormina/Giardini Naxos. The ticket cost us €4.30 each.

Durante el viaje en tren, por un lado se podía ver la costa y por el otro las montañas, incluyendo el volcán Etna. ¡Qué buenos recuerdos!

During the train ride, you could see the coast on one side and the mountains on the other, including Mount Etna. What wonderful memories!

Al llegar a Taormina teníamos dos alternativas para llegar a Giardini Naxos: caminar 45 minutos con las mochilas pesadas o tomar un autobús local. Por solo 1,90€ optamos por la opción más cómoda y así reducir el trayecto a apenas 10 o 15 minutos. No está mal.

When we arrived in Taormina, we had two options for getting to Giardini Naxos: walk 45 minutes with our heavy backpacks or take a local bus. For just €1.90, we chose the more comfortable option, cutting the trip down to just 10 or 15 minutes. Not bad.

Para llegar al hostal, teníamos que bajarnos en la "parada de Renault". Es curioso porque el conductor grita el nombre de la parada, y así sabes que es el momento de bajar. Aun así, íbamos consultando de vez en cuando con el GPS del móvil. To get to the hostel, we had to get off at the “Renault stop.” It's funny because the driver shouts out the name of the stop, so you know it's time to get off. Even so, we kept checking our phone's GPS every now and then.

El autobús nos dejó a pocos pasos del hostal. En esta ocasión se trata de Gianni House, un hostal del que me hablaron las chicas que conocí en Siracusa. Todas comentaron que era excelente y que el personal era muy amable, así que decidí darle una oportunidad.

The bus dropped us off just a few steps from the hostel. This time it’s Gianni House, a hostel that the girls I met in Syracuse told me about. They all said it was excellent and that the staff was very friendly, so I decided to give it a try.

El alojamiento: Gianni House La Gianni House se encuentra a medio camino entre Taormina y Giardini Naxos, lo que facilita la visita a ambas ciudades al mismo tiempo. Está a poca distancia de la playa y también ofrecen actividades y tours por Sicilia. El albergue es muy acogedor y es gestionado por una simpática pareja italiana.

Accommodation: Gianni House Gianni House is located halfway between Taormina and Giardini Naxos, making it easy to visit both towns at the same time. It’s just a short walk from the beach, and they also offer activities and tours around Sicily. The guesthouse is very cozy and is run by a friendly Italian couple.

Preguntamos si había espacio para un amigo y no hubo inconvenientes. De hecho, nos acomodaron a los tres en la misma habitación, sin nadie más. Era genial porque teníamos una terraza y un baño privado únicamente para nosotros. La mujer en recepción nos explicó cómo movernos por la zona y qué hacer y ver en Taormina y Giardini Naxos. Una vez que nos instalamos, fue momento de hacer un poco de turismo.

We asked if there was room for a friend, and it wasn't a problem. In fact, they accommodated the three of us in the same room, with no one else there. It was great because we had a terrace and a private bathroom all to ourselves. The woman at the front desk explained how to get around the area and what to do and see in Taormina and Giardini Naxos. Once we settled in, it was time to do a little sightseeing.

Visiting Taormina To get to Taormina, we took the same bus as before, but in the opposite direction. The ticket also cost us €1.90. A pesar de eso, Taormina es realmente bonita y se considera una de las ciudades más encantadoras de Sicilia. Dimos un corto paseo por el centro, pero al final decidimos cambiar de rumbo porque la multitud no nos convencía del todo. Nuestra próxima parada fue Isola Bella, una pequeña isla en la parte baja de Taormina. Pensábamos que llegaríamos pronto, pero desde la parte alta nos tomó unos 30 o 40 minutos caminando. Por suerte, todo era bajada aunque todo lo que bajamos luego tenemos que hacerlo de regreso… .

Despite that, Taormina is truly beautiful and is considered one of the most charming towns in Sicily. We took a short stroll through the center, but in the end we decided to change course because the crowds didn’t quite appeal to us. Our next stop was Isola Bella, a small island at the bottom of Taormina. We thought we’d get there quickly, but it took us about 30 or 40 minutes to walk down from the top. Luckily, it was all downhill though we’d have to walk back up everything we went down…

Isola Bella Isola Bella is one of Sicily’s best-known and most beautiful beaches. There stands the picturesque house that once belonged to Florence Trevelyan, niece of Queen Victoria I of the United Kingdom and wife of Professor Salvatore Cacciola, the philanthropist mayor of Taormina.

Como indica su nombre, Isola Bella es efectivamente una isla, pero cuando la marea baja se puede cruzar a pie, convirtiéndose en una península. Nosotros pudimos pasar sin inconvenientes. Fui a Isola Bella con grandes expectativas y, la verdad, me decepcionó un poco. Primero, porque el camino que une Taormina con la isla estaba lleno de turistas que estaban nadando.

As its name suggests, Isola Bella is indeed an island, but at low tide you can walk across it, turning it into a peninsula. We were able to cross without any trouble. I went to Isola Bella with high expectations, and to be honest, I was a little disappointed. First of all, because the path connecting Taormina to the island was crowded with tourists who were swimming.
