A Week of Sweat and Smiles: My Nephew’s Treadmill Challenge
Last Saturday, my nephew dropped by my house for a surprise visit and before I knew it, he’d challenged me to something I never saw coming. As soon as he spotted the treadmill tucked in the corner of my living room, his eyes lit up with excitement. “Tita,” he said with a grin, “let’s do a challenge! Let’s use your treadmill regularly for one week and see if we notice any changes in how we feel. I want to keep track of our activity updates too!” I’ll admit, I was a bit hesitant at first. While I’d bought the treadmill with good intentions months ago, it had mostly been collecting dust life gets busy, and exercise often falls to the bottom of my to-do list. But seeing how enthusiastic my nephew was, I couldn’t say no. We shook on it right then and there, agreeing to log our workouts each day and check in with each other about how we were feeling.

We decided to start small to make sure we could stick to it. On day one, we hopped on the treadmill together him going at a steady jog while I started with a brisk walk. We set a goal of 20 minutes per day, and made a simple chart to mark off each session we completed. My nephew even brought his phone along to track our steps and heart rate, updating our “activity log” on a small whiteboard I keep in the kitchen. As the days went by, something surprising happened we both started looking forward to our treadmill time. On day three, I managed to increase my speed a little and add five more minutes to my walk. My nephew, who’s more active than I am, challenged himself to add short bursts of running to his routine.
