Inside the Barrel V

Today we continue with the fifth installment of this in-depth review of the series El Chavo del Ocho. In the last installment, we were captivated by how Chespirito, with his unparalleled creative genius, took the sitcom format and molded it to his own style, and what his greatest inspirations were in creating his unique brand of comedy. Geniuses like Cantinflas and Charles Chaplin were fundamental, but there was even more material that inspired the creative humor of the brilliant Roberto Gómez Bolaños, Chespirito, and his unmistakable "Clean Humor."

The third and no less important than the previous ones major current that contributes to and complements Chespirito's humor was, without a doubt, the Spanish American picaresque novel, a literary tradition founded on the spirit of Renaissance humanism, which began with the work Lazarillo de Tormes an anonymous novel from 1554 and was revived by the geniuses of Quevedo with El Buscón 1626 , Cervantes with his Don Quixote of La Mancha, 1605 , and the Mexicans Fernández de Lizardi and José Rubén Romero, authors of El Periquillo Sarniento 1816 and La Vida inútil de Pito Pérez 1938 , respectively.

From Cervantes' picaresque novels, Gómez Bolaños takes the anti-heroic main characters, whose actions are conditioned by a hostile environment. How much of Don Quixote can be found in another of his great characters, El Chapulín Colorado, for example? Meanwhile, from Lazarillo de Tormes, El Buscón, and Mexican picaresque novels, the writer inherits themes such as childhood, poverty, inequality, social impositions, school, orphanhood, and child labor, among others.

With one major difference, however: While the aforementioned novels address these themes with a strong dose of irony and social commentary, in El Chavo del Ocho the author is content to portray them without condemning them, without delving into their causes, and without engaging in polemics regarding his observations. Consequently, from its inception, El Chavo del Ocho received fierce criticism, especially in academic and intellectual circles of the time, accusing it of romanticizing poverty or trivializing the exploitation and child abuse suffered by El Chavo del Ocho at the hands of the other characters, both adults and children, but largely by Don Ramón.

The dramatic solutions to all the social and economic contradictions in the series are always found by appealing to the positive side of each of the characters. Despite their negative traits or character flaws, the characters always end up showing their noble side and being "essentially good," thus rounding out a socially and politically conciliatory discourse that distances itself from the extreme positions that clashed during the accelerated "modernization" of post-revolutionary Mexico.

A clear example is the legendary episode where a thief, Mr. Hurtado, arrives at the neighborhood and begins stealing from the residents. They realize there's a thief among them, and the episode reaches its climax when the thief, in his escape to avoid being discovered, hides the stolen goods in El Chavo's barrel. When the object is discovered, the entire neighborhood turns its back on El Chavo, accusing him of being a thief in one of the series' most poignant and dramatic scenes I cried as a child the first time I saw it . El Chavo leaves the neighborhood, accused of being the thief. But everything is resolved when he returns and confesses that he went to a church and prayed for everything to be alright. La Chilindrina and Quico ask him if he prayed so the police would catch the thief. El Chavo replies, "No, so he'll repent and become a good person." Mr. Hurtado, who overhears the child…

Thus, while Don Ramón displays traits of the "charming rascal" who avoids work and paying rent, typical of the picaresque tradition, we also see in him the solidarity of someone who ensures El Chavo eats every day, goes to school, and has a birthday party. Similarly, the socially prejudiced Doña Florinda, who "spoils" her son, Quico, by indulging him excessively and constantly reminding him of his superiority over "the riffraff," is the same woman who doesn't hesitate to help her neighbors for the good of the neighborhood whenever necessary.

In this way, an entire school of so-called "clean humor" was established, of which Chespirito was considered its greatest and most successful exponent in Latin America. Humor for everyone, conflict-free, with a deep impact on all social strata and accessible to all ages, since it was never limited to the fact that it featured adults dressed as children, but allowed viewers to see universal behaviors of childhood, of the poor, of the elderly, of the downtrodden, of teachers, of old-fashioned lovers, among others in these archetypal characters entangled in absurd, but mostly believable, situations, making it possible for audiences of all ages to immediately identify with them, beyond localisms in speech, translation limitations, and the representation of certain customs typical of urban Mexico in the 1970s. This universality and "suitable for all audiences" nature of the humor of El Chavo…

From archetypal characters to endearing representations.

Archetypes are universal symbolic models that represent common patterns of behavior, characters, or situations, recognizable and shared by all cultures. They were proposed by the psychologist Carl Jung in the 20th century as an essential part rooted in the collective unconscious. Their concept dates back to the philosophy of Plato, who proposed the existence of "perfect examples" of things that exist in the divine world, a kind of substantial form whose knowledge we can access through abstraction. Between ancient Greece and psychoanalysis lies a long period in which the concept of archetype developed, changing in orientation and meaning according to the era and the author, but always pointing toward "ideal types" or patterns that guide our individual behavior.

Because they serve as points of reference, archetypes are very important in literary creation, theater, film, and all the arts in general, as they are the primary source of attributes for character development. Therefore, when representing characters such as the Mother, the Hero, the Villain, the Son, the Teacher, or the Child, the author of the work needs them to correspond to a common idea of Mother, Hero, Villain, Son, Teacher, or Child, beyond their particular characteristics and motivations, so that they are easily recognizable by the audience who sees or reads the work.

This process of referencing an ideal carries a strong moral weight, and although we can see it constantly being updated in the development of film and television, it retains its significant importance in the construction and development of characters in any screenplay.
