HQ 18 : La Bella Flor Oriental 2

HQ 18 : The Beautiful Eastern Flower 2
Heriberto Quintales, still quite surprised by the news that little Alberto isn't Flor's little brother but his son, finishes his cotton candy and offers to walk her home, which she accepts.
The bank teller glances back to see where his new best friend is and breathes a sigh of relief when he sees that Teresita Aguirre still has Antonio Lombardo occupied and holds him firmly by the arm, preventing him from following them. He has to take advantage of this.
Heriberto, the oriental flower, and her little offspring crossed the town without much hurry. Quintales chatted about trivialities, unsure how to broach the subject of the child's father. Before he knew it, he was standing in front of the boarding house where Flor had rented a room.
The boarding house was on the other side of the town of Love, near the exit of the old stone road of the viceroys. Flor didn't live on Chinese Street with her people, those of her race. The first thing any Chinese person would do upon arriving in an unfamiliar town is ask where their people live.
"How strange that you live here! If I wanted to find you, I would have assumed you lived on Chinese Street at the other end of town!" Heriberto remarked with a smile.
"I'm not Chinese, well, only half of it!" replied the beautiful oriental flower with another smile. "It's a long story."
"It's Sunday and I'm free. How about I invite you to lunch? It's almost time, and you can tell me the story if it's not too much trouble."
Flor Lins took a deep breath. She'd been asked that question so many times since leaving her hometown, El Olvido, that she'd invented a believable story about both her origins and her son's, using a little truth, but it was necessary to lie to hide her true past, for which she would be judged and Alberto would be outlawed for being the bastard son of a night-blooming flower!
"We accept!" The three of them set off for a nearby inn. "Have you heard about the tragedy in Santa Catarina?" Flor asked.
"Of course, it was national news!" Heriberto replied.
"Three years ago, one night, the Santa Catarina dam cracked. No one knows why or how. The torrent of water from the reservoir swept away everything in its path, including the small town of Santa Catarina, which was caught off guard while they slept. More than half of its homes were destroyed—a national tragedy.”
When they arrived at the inn, they took a table, and Flor Lins began her fabricated story from the beginning: she was born 22 years ago on a small farm a few kilometers from the town of Santa Catarina, where she was raised by her grandmother and mother. Her father was a Chinese merchant who traveled the roads selling exotic goods and fireworks to the towns of the central region. He visited Santa Catarina three or four times a year. At a town fair, under a sky illuminated by the rockets he had sold earlier, Wong Tao met her mother, Lisbeth Córdova.
They fell in love that very night, but they had to overcome the usual obstacles. Wong Tao, besides being Chinese, was a Buddhist, and her grandmother Isabel didn't want her only daughter to marry a heretic, and to top it all off, a Chinese one! So the lovers planned to run away together. Wong Tao left the village in his cart, promising to return for Lisbeth in a couple of months. He was going to finalize some business deals and earn enough money to buy a house and open a permanent business in another town.
But Wong Tao never returned for Lisbeth, and nine months after his departure, Flor was born. Grandmother Isabel always told her daughter and her young granddaughter that Wong Tao was a con man who had taken advantage of her to defile her body without any intention of returning to keep his promise of marriage. But Lisbeth always believed Wong Tao's word and told little Flor stories of his adventures and the meaning of the Chinese words her father used to woo her.
"What a sad story!" Heriberto commented.
"That's right, you'll understand that I'm only half Chinese, even though I look completely Chinese, and I don't know much about your ancient culture except for a handful of words my father whispered in my mother's ear!"
"And Alberto's father?" Heriberto ventured to ask directly.
Flor remembered her son's real father and let out a genuine sob. She took a breath and continued with her fabricated story: when she turned 17, they lost their farm because they couldn't pay the mortgage. Her grandmother Isabel had died two years earlier, and she and her mother had to move to the town of Santa Catarina and live in a boarding house. They washed clothes and cleaned houses to earn money. Because she looked Chinese, it was harder for her to find a job. From a young age, she suffered discrimination because of her race, both at school and in the town.
While cooking in a house where she was hired as a temporary maid, she met her employer's nephew, Alberto Lins. He was young, handsome, very intelligent, and funny. From the beginning, he treated her with respect, making her feel special and never making her feel different because of her Asian features. After a year of courtship, and despite her family's opposition—they didn't want their son to have a relationship with a Chinese woman—and despite knowing her story, Flor Córdova and Alberto Lins were married in the Church of Santa Catarina on a sunny morning.
The newlyweds moved into a small house in the center of town. Her mother, Lisbeth, lived with them. They were very happy for a year until the flood occurred. Flor Lins was six months pregnant the night the dam broke and the water poured down on Santa Catarina, sweeping away everything in its path like a curse. When the water took them by surprise, Alberto struggled with nature and lifted his young wife onto the branch of a leafy oak tree in the backyard. He didn't go up; he went back to save his mother-in-law, who was screaming for help inside what was left of the house. Flor stayed up there, shivering with cold. She would have jumped into the water to look for them, but she thought of her baby. The force and height of the water took everything. She never saw Alberto or her mother, Isabel, again!
"Wow! What a story!" was all Heriberto could manage to say, trying not to put his foot in his mouth.
"I lost my husband and my mother, my house, and all my possessions. Alberto was born in a field hospital set up by the army. When I felt strong enough, I left and took the train to the capital. I wasn't very lucky. My appearance and lack of education limited my chances. I did what I knew to earn money: cooking, washing clothes, or cleaning houses. But with a small child, no one would give me a permanent job. So one day, I packed everything I owned into a suitcase and decided to try my luck in a small town. That's how I ended up here. Last week, I got off the boat at the dock with my son Alberto, looking for a future for us!"
