Hamas offers to hand over authority in Gaza to US-backed administration

Hamas has formally announced its intention to relinquish its governing authority in the Gaza Strip after two decades in power. The militant group has invited a US-backed interim administration—the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza NCAG —to take over the governance of the Palestinian territory.

While the announcement marks a significant political shift, the group has made no commitment to unilateral disarmament, a core demand of both the United States and Israel. The NCAG, which was established in January as part of a ceasefire agreement, has faced significant hurdles, including being blocked from entering Gaza by Israeli forces. Analysts view this move as a strategic and largely symbolic maneuver by Hamas aimed at reviving a stalled peace process and addressing the severe humanitarian crisis affecting the 2.1 million people currently in the territory.
