The Best Form of Education
Feng Zidong, 25 years old, is from Chengxi County, Gansu Province. He is studying for a master's degree at Lanzhou University and will pursue a doctoral degree at Fudan University after graduation. Lanzhou University implements an appointment system for entering the campus. However, since the beginning of his master's studies, he noticed that the security department always allowed an elderly woman pushing a cart and hunched over to walk through. The old lady would go into the campus every day to sort through paper boxes and bottles. After she finished, she would use the cleaning staff's broom to clean the area around the trash can and then put the garbage back in place.
During his thesis defense, Feng Zidong specifically thanked Lanzhou University and the university's security department. It was this university that gave an old lady the space to make a living.
The university has strict regulations prohibiting uninvited people from entering the campus. It is understandable and reasonable to prohibit beggars from entering the campus to collect waste. Moreover, the reasons would be quite sufficient - the old lady would make the trash cans in the campus worse and damage the school's environment and hygiene, as well as the school's image.
However, the security personnel did not do so. What they saw was an old woman with a hunched back, thin body, and grizzled hair, struggling for survival. If they closed that door, the old lady's life would become even more difficult and she might go without food. Opening this door gave the old lady an income and a hope for life. For an elderly person, picking up garbage and selling it for money is the only thing he can do.
The security personnel saw the old lady's hardship and desperation, as well as her helplessness. The shining aspects of human nature led them to choose to tacitly allow the old lady to enter the campus to pick up garbage. But the old lady also knew how to repay kindness. After picking up the garbage, she would clean the garbage around the trash can and not cause trouble for the cleaning staff.
The cold system, the warm heart, is precisely the touching details in daily life that hide the shining light of humanity.
This incident touched Feng Zidong, and I believe it also touched many students of Gansu University, also moved me, who had just read this news.
As Feng Zidong said: "I hope that in the future, I can build on today's path of studying and become a somewhat capable person. I don't seek to achieve great success but rather to help those in need, just to provide as much assistance as possible."
Having kindness in the heart and seeing the world with compassion - this is the best form of education. The university not only teaches students knowledge and skills, but also shapes their values and outlook on life, making them responsible, compassionate, kind, upright, and beneficial to society.
