A Touch of Christmas in the Ore Mountains

Incense Men, Weihrichkarzle and a Touch of Christmas

When you visit the Ore Mountains, it is almost impossible to avoid incense smokers, candle arches and Christmas pyramids. Traditional wooden craftsmanship is simply part of this region.

What surprised us was that many of these decorations are produced throughout the entire year, even though most people only use them during the relatively short Christmas season.

Our first stop was the 1st Incense Smoker Museum . Inside, we found an impressive collection of incense smokers in almost every imaginable size and design. There were traditional forest workers, hunters and craftsmen, but also railway workers, soldiers and many unusual figures.

While looking at the huge collection, I caught myself wondering what would happen if someone lit all the incense smokers at the same time. It would probably take quite a while, and the smell inside the museum would certainly become very intense.

The museum also displayed large Christmas pyramids, candle arches and many other examples of traditional craftsmanship from the Ore Mountains. Some pieces were so richly decorated that you hardly knew where to look first. The larger pyramids in particular showed how much work, patience and skill are required to create them.

Later, we visited two well-known producers of incense cones. Our first stop was HUSS Räucherkerzen in Neudorf , where the incense cones are traditionally called Weihrichkarzle .

Afterwards, we continued to the Crottendorfer Räucherkerzenland . Its huge building shaped like an incense cone is difficult to miss and already makes the visit something special before you even enter the shop.

It is difficult to believe how many different fragrances are available today. In addition to the traditional scents, there were so many varieties that we eventually felt slightly overwhelmed.

At first, you want to smell every single one. But after trying several fragrances, your nose slowly reaches the point where everything starts to smell almost the same.

Of course, Christmas is still a long way off. Nevertheless, the visits were great fun and brought us a small touch of Christmas in the middle of summer.

And as so often happens during such visits, one or two things somehow found their way into our shopping basket.

Räuchermännchen, Weihrichkarzle und ein Hauch von Weihnachten

Wer ins Erzgebirge kommt, kommt an Räuchermännchen, Schwibbögen und Weihnachtspyramiden kaum vorbei. Die traditionelle Holzkunst gehört einfach zu dieser Region.

Im 1. Räuchermann Museum konnten wir eine beeindruckende Sammlung mit Figuren in den unterschiedlichsten Größen und Ausführungen bestaunen. Beim Anblick der vielen Räuchermännchen fragte ich mich kurz, wie es wohl riechen würde, wenn man sie alle gleichzeitig anzündet. Vermutlich wäre der Duft mehr als intensiv.

Neben den Figuren gab es große Pyramiden, Schwibbögen und viele aufwendig gefertigte Holzarbeiten zu entdecken.

Später besuchten wir HUSS Räucherkerzen in Neudorf und das Crottendorfer Räucherkerzenland . Besonders das riesige Gebäude in Form einer Räucherkerze war kaum zu übersehen.

Bei der großen Auswahl an verschiedenen Düften waren wir irgendwann leicht überfordert. Nach einigen Duftproben wusste unsere Nase kaum noch, was sie eigentlich gerade wahrnimmt.

Auch wenn Weihnachten noch weit entfernt ist, hat uns der Besuch viel Spaß gemacht. Und natürlich ist am Ende auch das eine oder andere Stück in unseren Einkaufskorb gesprungen.
