Leapmotor T03 Test Drive

Leapmotor T03: Full Equipment, a Convincing Test Drive and a Surprising Price

Some time ago, we wrote about our test drive with the new electric Renault Twingo. On paper, the Twingo looked like an interesting candidate to replace my wife’s current car. During the test drive, however, the spark simply did not jump over.

Now we have taken a closer look at the Leapmotor T03 , and this time the reaction was completely different.

My wife was delighted almost immediately.

Looking for a Successor to Our 2002 Smart

My wife currently drives a first-generation Smart from 2002. The little car has served her well for many years and is still extremely practical in the city.

It is short, easy to manoeuvre and fits into parking spaces that many other cars cannot use. For daily trips, shopping and short distances, it still does its job surprisingly well.

After more than twenty years, however, we are slowly looking for a modern replacement.

The next car should remain compact because it will mainly be used in town. At the same time, it should offer more comfort, more safety, four doors and enough space for everyday life.

That is exactly where the Leapmotor T03 becomes interesting.

The First Few Kilometres Were Already Convincing

The T03 feels light, uncomplicated and pleasant to drive.

It accelerates smoothly, the steering is easy to handle and the car can be guided through city traffic without any effort. The seating position is relatively high, which gives the driver a good view of the surroundings.

This is something my wife already appreciates about her Smart.

Although the T03 is noticeably larger than the old Smart, it never felt bulky or difficult to handle. It still has the character of a practical city car, but it offers much more space and comfort.

The electric drive also suits the car very well. There are no gear changes, no interruptions and no unnecessary engine noise. Especially at low speeds, the T03 feels calm and relaxed.

During our test drive, the digital display showed a remaining range of 284 kilometres . For the distances my wife normally drives, that would be more than sufficient.

The Sound at Low Speed

Up to a speed of approximately 20 to 30 kilometres per hour, we could hear a noticeable sound.

At first, one might think that this sound comes directly from the electric motor. In reality, it is most likely the acoustic warning system for pedestrians, known as AVAS .

Electric cars are extremely quiet at low speeds. The artificial sound helps pedestrians, cyclists and especially visually impaired people notice the approaching vehicle.

As the speed increases, tyre and wind noise become more noticeable, and the artificial sound gradually disappears.

We did not find it disturbing. After a short time, we hardly noticed it anymore.

One Equipment Version and Almost Everything Included

One of the strongest arguments for the Leapmotor T03 is its equipment.

With many other cars, the advertised entry price only applies to a basic version. As soon as automatic climate control, a reversing camera, assistance systems or a better multimedia system are added, the final price rises considerably.

Leapmotor follows a much simpler approach.

The T03 is essentially offered in one extensively equipped version. Automatic climate control, a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, digital instruments, navigation, a large central touchscreen and the panoramic glass roof are already included.

As we like to say in Germany, it is practically “volle Hütte” , meaning that almost everything is already on board.

There is no need to work through several equipment lines or add numerous expensive packages.

This makes the comparison with the Twingo particularly noticeable. The Twingo did not convince my wife during the test drive, while the T03 not only felt better to her but also offered the more complete overall package.

More Practical Than the Old Smart

Of course, the Leapmotor T03 is not as short as the first-generation Smart. No normal four-door car can compete with the Smart in that respect.

However, the T03 offers four proper doors, a usable rear bench and a significantly more practical interior.

Passengers can enter without climbing past the front seats, and there is enough room for shopping bags and normal daily use.

The boot is not enormous, but it is suitable for the intended purpose. For larger items, the rear seats can be folded down.

The panoramic glass roof also makes a noticeable difference. It allows plenty of light into the interior and makes the small car feel more spacious than one might expect from the outside.

The Price Makes the T03 Particularly Interesting

The Leapmotor T03 is offered at a price of around €18,900 .

Considering the extensive standard equipment, that price is already difficult to ignore.

The calculation becomes even more interesting if the maximum government support of €6,000 applies in our case.

The calculation would then be very simple:

€18,900 purchase price

minus €6,000 government support

equals €12,900

That would mean a new electric city car with four doors, automatic climate control, a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic glass roof and numerous assistance systems for just under €13,000.

It is difficult to find another new car that offers a comparable package in this price range.

Of course, the actual support depends on the applicable conditions and personal eligibility. We would therefore check the exact requirements before signing a purchase contract.

But if the full amount applies, the price-to-equipment ratio becomes extremely strong.

The Most Important Point Is the Driving Experience

Technical data, range figures and equipment lists are important. However, a car must also feel right.

My wife drove both the Twingo and the Leapmotor T03.

The Twingo did not create any real enthusiasm. With the T03, the reaction was completely different. She felt comfortable almost immediately and enjoyed driving it through the city.

That personal impression matters more than any comparison table.

The T03 may not be designed for regular long-distance motorway journeys, but that is not what we need it for. It would mainly replace the old Smart and be used for shopping, short journeys and everyday city traffic.

For precisely this purpose, the concept seems very convincing.

Our Conclusion

The Leapmotor T03 surprised us.

It is compact, pleasant to drive, extensively equipped and reasonably practical. Most importantly, my wife felt comfortable behind the wheel from the beginning.

Compared with her 2002 Smart, it offers considerably more comfort, safety and space while remaining manageable enough for city traffic.

Compared with the Twingo, the T03 made the better impression during the test drive and offers an impressive amount of standard equipment.

When the possible government support is included in the calculation, the price becomes difficult to beat.

Could the Leapmotor T03 become the successor to our old Smart?

After this test drive, the answer is definitely moving closer to yes.

What do you think about the Leapmotor T03? Would you consider such a small electric car for daily city driving?

And what matters most to you when buying a car: the brand, the equipment, the driving experience or the final price?

Was haltet ihr vom Leapmotor T03?
