My First 1,000-Metre Mountain

Most people here probably know by now that I come from the Baltic Sea coast. Mountains are therefore not exactly part of my everyday life. But after this holiday, I can finally say that I have visited my first mountain higher than 1,000 metres.

When you are staying in Oberwiesenthal, a trip to the Fichtelberg is simply a must. At 1,214 metres, it is the highest mountain in Saxony. For someone from the flat north of Germany, that already feels like a proper mountain.

We were also very lucky with the weather on this day. During our entire holiday, we had only two really beautiful days. This was one of them, so we had to make the most of it.

At the summit, we were welcomed by a bright blue sky and a wide view across the Ore Mountains. Forests, meadows, small villages and rolling hills stretched all the way to the horizon.

At home on the coast, we look out across the Baltic Sea. Here, the view went across mountains and valleys instead. Both landscapes are beautiful, but they could hardly be more different.

Of course, we also took the cable car. During the ride down, Oberwiesenthal lay directly below us. We could see the ski slopes, lifts and snow cannons that are probably very busy during winter.

In summer, however, everything felt much quieter. That was also something we noticed during our stay. Oberwiesenthal is strongly focused on winter tourism. Outside the snowy season, the selection of activities is rather limited.

You can hike, cycle, enjoy the landscape and use the cable car, but apart from that, the town sometimes feels as if it is already waiting for the next winter.

That is a little disappointing because the region has a lot of potential. The landscape is beautiful, and there should be more ways to make Oberwiesenthal attractive throughout the year.

Despite that, our visit to the Fichtelberg was one of the highlights of the holiday. We had sunshine, a fantastic view and made good use of one of our two beautiful days.

My first 1,000-metre mountain is now officially completed. For someone from the Baltic Sea coast, 1,214 metres almost felt like a small expedition.

Mein erster Tausender

Ich komme von der Ostseeküste, das wissen inzwischen wohl die meisten. Berge gehören deshalb nicht gerade zu meinem Alltag. Nach diesem Urlaub kann ich aber endlich sagen: Ich habe meinen ersten Tausender besucht.

Wenn man in Oberwiesenthal ist, gehört ein Ausflug auf den Fichtelberg einfach dazu. Mit seinen 1.214 Metern ist er der höchste Berg Sachsens und für einen Flachlandbewohner schon eine richtige Ansage.

Wir hatten während unseres gesamten Urlaubs nur zwei wirklich schöne Tage. Einer davon war dieser Tag. Blauer Himmel, Sonnenschein und eine weite Sicht über das Erzgebirge machten den Ausflug zu einem der Höhepunkte unseres Urlaubs.

Natürlich fuhren wir auch mit der Seilbahn. Während der Fahrt hatten wir einen tollen Blick auf Oberwiesenthal, die Skipisten und die Liftanlagen.

Dabei fiel uns aber auch auf, wie stark der Ort auf den Winter ausgerichtet ist. Ohne Schnee ist das Freizeitangebot eher überschaubar. Wandern, Radfahren, die Landschaft und die Seilbahn sind natürlich schön, trotzdem könnte man aus der Region im Sommer deutlich mehr machen.

Der Besuch auf dem Fichtelberg hat sich trotzdem gelohnt. Mein erster Tausender ist geschafft und für jemanden von der Küste fühlten sich 1.214 Meter schon fast wie eine kleine Expedition an.
