There are cars you look at and immediately start thinking about numbers. Battery size, range, charging, equipment and price. And then there are cars where all of that comes later, because the first thing they do is simply make you smile.

That is exactly what happened with the Renault Twingo E-Tech.

Es gibt Autos, bei denen schaut man hin und denkt sofort an Zahlen. Akkugröße, Reichweite, Laden, Ausstattung und Preis. Und dann gibt es Autos, bei denen das alles erst später kommt, weil sie einem im ersten Moment einfach ein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubern.

Genau so war es beim Renault Twingo E-Tech.

This little green city car stood there like it knew exactly what it was doing. Small, cheeky, friendly and somehow familiar. Renault really managed to bring back the old Twingo feeling without making it look outdated. The shape, the headlights, the small details on the bonnet and the whole appearance immediately reminded us of the first Twingo, but in a fresh and modern way.

Dieser kleine grüne Stadtflitzer stand da, als wüsste er ganz genau, was er mit einem macht. Klein, frech, freundlich und irgendwie vertraut. Renault hat es wirklich geschafft, das alte Twingo Gefühl zurückzuholen, ohne dass der Wagen altbacken wirkt. Die Form, die Scheinwerfer, die kleinen Details auf der Motorhaube und der gesamte Auftritt erinnern sofort an den ersten Twingo, nur eben frisch und modern interpretiert.

And we were not the only ones who noticed it. While driving, you could clearly see the looks from people on the street. The Twingo is not loud, not aggressive and not overstyled. But he catches the eye. He has character. He looks like a small car that does not want to be just another electric box on wheels.

Und nicht nur wir haben das bemerkt. Während der Fahrt waren die Blicke auf der Straße eindeutig. Der Twingo ist nicht laut, nicht aggressiv und nicht übertrieben gestylt. Aber er fällt auf. Er hat Charakter. Er wirkt wie ein kleines Auto, das nicht einfach nur eine weitere elektrische Kiste auf Rädern sein will.

For a moment, I really thought: that is it. The little Renault almost had my wife’s heart in his pocket.

Für einen Moment dachte ich wirklich: Das ist er. Der kleine Renault hatte das Herz meiner Frau fast schon in der Tasche.

But a test drive is not only about standing in front of a car and falling in love with the design. At some point you sit inside, close the door, start driving and then the first impression has to survive real life.

Aber eine Probefahrt besteht eben nicht nur daraus, vor einem Auto zu stehen und sich in das Design zu verlieben. Irgendwann sitzt man drin, schließt die Tür, fährt los und dann muss der erste Eindruck den Alltagstest bestehen.

My wife had one big advantage during this drive. She already knew the previous Twingo from work. That meant she was not just judging the new one by looks, but also by memory. And memories can be dangerous for a new car, because you immediately notice what feels different.

Meine Frau hatte bei dieser Probefahrt einen großen Vorteil. Sie kannte das Vorgängermodell bereits aus dem dienstlichen Alltag. Dadurch hat sie den neuen Twingo nicht nur nach dem Aussehen bewertet, sondern auch mit ihrer Erinnerung verglichen. Und genau das kann für ein neues Auto gefährlich werden, denn man merkt sofort, was sich anders anfühlt.

The first thing she noticed was the steering. It felt heavier than she expected. For a small city car, you somehow expect lightness. You expect a car that feels easy in tight streets, easy in parking spaces and easy when turning around. Just get in, drive, park and go. That relaxed feeling was not quite there for her.

Das Erste, was ihr auffiel, war die Lenkung. Sie ging schwerer, als sie erwartet hatte. Bei einem kleinen Stadtauto denkt man automatisch an Leichtigkeit. Man erwartet ein Auto, das sich in engen Straßen, beim Einparken und beim Wenden spielerisch bewegen lässt. Einsteigen, losfahren, parken und gut. Dieses ganz entspannte Gefühl war für sie nicht sofort da.

Then came the seating position. She sat noticeably lower than expected and could not really see the beginning of the car. That may sound like a small detail, but in everyday life such things matter. Especially when parking or maneuvering, confidence is everything. If you do not feel where the car begins or ends, the charm of the design suddenly has to fight against a little bit of uncertainty.

Dann kam die Sitzposition dazu. Sie saß spürbar tiefer als erwartet und konnte den Anfang vom Fahrzeug nicht richtig sehen. Das klingt vielleicht nach einer Kleinigkeit, aber im Alltag machen genau solche Dinge viel aus. Gerade beim Einparken oder Rangieren ist Vertrauen wichtig. Wenn man nicht richtig fühlt oder sieht, wo das Auto anfängt oder endet, muss der schöne Retro Charme plötzlich gegen ein kleines Gefühl der Unsicherheit kämpfen.

And that was the first real crack in the love story.

Und genau das war der erste kleine Riss in der Liebesgeschichte.

From the outside, the Twingo was almost perfect. Inside, he still had to convince her.

Von außen war der Twingo fast perfekt. Innen musste er sie erst noch richtig überzeugen.

Of course, the Twingo E-Tech is not meant to be a long distance king. It is a city car. Renault gives it a battery of around 27.5 kWh and a range of up to about 263 kilometers. For shopping, commuting, short trips and everyday use, that sounds absolutely fine. This is not the kind of car you buy to cross half of Europe in one go.

Natürlich ist der Twingo E-Tech kein Langstreckenkönig. Er ist ein Stadtauto. Renault gibt ihm einen Akku mit rund 27,5 kWh und eine Reichweite von bis zu etwa 263 Kilometern mit. Für Einkauf, Arbeitsweg, kurze Ausflüge und den normalen Alltag klingt das völlig ausreichend. Das ist kein Auto, das man kauft, um am Stück halb Europa zu durchqueren.

But range was never the main question for us. The real question was much simpler: does my wife feel good in this car?

Aber die Reichweite war für uns gar nicht die wichtigste Frage. Die eigentliche Frage war viel einfacher: Fühlt sich meine Frau in diesem Auto wohl?

Because a small car has one very important job. It has to make life easier. It should be simple, friendly and stress free. When you drive into town, look for a parking space or squeeze through narrow streets, you do not want to fight with the car. You want it to feel like a helpful little companion.

Denn ein kleines Auto hat eine ganz wichtige Aufgabe. Es soll einem das Leben leichter machen. Es soll einfach, freundlich und stressfrei sein. Wenn man in die Stadt fährt, einen Parkplatz sucht oder durch enge Straßen muss, will man nicht mit dem Auto kämpfen. Man möchte das Gefühl haben, einen kleinen Helfer an seiner Seite zu haben.

After the drive came the serious part: the price talk.

Nach der Fahrt kam dann der ernste Teil: das Preisgespräch.

That is always the moment when the dream either becomes more real or suddenly gets smaller. On the road, the Twingo had played with our emotions. In the showroom, the calculator joined the conversation.

Das ist immer der Moment, in dem der Traum entweder greifbarer wird oder plötzlich kleiner. Auf der Straße hatte der Twingo mit unseren Gefühlen gespielt. Im Autohaus setzte sich dann der Taschenrechner mit an den Tisch.

We were not looking for a luxury version. We did not need a rolling tech palace full of things nobody uses later. What we wanted was a simple and sensible version, the kind of car that has what you really need and leaves out the nonsense.

Wir suchten keine Luxusversion. Wir brauchten keinen rollenden Techniktempel voller Dinge, die später keiner nutzt. Wir wollten eher eine einfache und vernünftige Ausstattung, also genau das, was man wirklich braucht, ohne unnötigen Schnickschnack.

Or as we like to say: the “simple spruce”. Nothing exaggerated, nothing overloaded, just a small electric car that makes everyday life easier.

Oder wie wir gerne sagen: die schlichte Fichte. Nichts Übertriebenes, nichts Überladenes, einfach ein kleines Elektroauto, das den Alltag leichter macht.

For us, one feature quickly became very important: the rear view camera.

Ein Punkt wurde für uns aber sehr schnell wichtig: die Rückfahrkamera.

With the small rear window and my wife’s seating position, this was not just a toy or a fancy extra. It would give her confidence. And confidence is worth a lot when a car is supposed to be used every day. Parking should not feel like guessing. A city car should make these moments easier, not more complicated.

Bei der kleinen Heckscheibe und der Sitzposition meiner Frau wäre das für uns kein Spielzeug und auch kein unnötiges Extra. Es würde ihr Sicherheit geben. Und Sicherheit ist viel wert, wenn ein Auto jeden Tag genutzt werden soll. Einparken darf sich nicht wie Raten anfühlen. Ein Stadtauto soll genau solche Momente leichter machen und nicht schwieriger.

That is where the Twingo became a little tricky for us. The entry price looks tempting. But when the equipment you really want pushes you toward the higher version, the simple little car suddenly starts to become less simple.

Genau an diesem Punkt wurde der Twingo für uns etwas schwieriger. Der Einstiegspreis klingt verlockend. Aber wenn die Ausstattung, die man im Alltag wirklich möchte, einen in Richtung der besseren Version schiebt, wird aus dem einfachen kleinen Auto plötzlich etwas weniger Einfaches.

And then there was another car in the back of our minds: the Leapmotor T03.

Und dann war da noch ein anderes Auto im Hinterkopf: der Leapmotor T03.

The T03 does not have the same emotional power as the Renault. It does not bring back childhood memories. It does not have this playful retro face that makes people turn their heads. It looks more practical, more rational and maybe even a bit less exciting.

Der T03 hat nicht dieselbe emotionale Wirkung wie der Renault. Er weckt keine alten Erinnerungen. Er hat nicht dieses verspielte Retro Gesicht, bei dem sich die Leute auf der Straße umdrehen. Er wirkt praktischer, sachlicher und vielleicht auch etwas weniger aufregend.

But when you look at what you get for the money, the story changes. More battery, more power, plenty of equipment and a price that makes you think twice. Suddenly the T03 is not the emotional choice, but the very strong argument from the other side of the table.

Aber wenn man sich anschaut, was man für das Geld bekommt, ändert sich die Geschichte. Mehr Akku, mehr Leistung, viel Ausstattung und ein Preis, bei dem man automatisch genauer hinschaut. Plötzlich ist der T03 nicht die emotionale Wahl, sondern das starke Argument von der anderen Seite des Tisches.

And that is exactly where the real decision begins.

Und genau dort beginnt die eigentliche Entscheidung.

Do you buy the car that makes your heart jump a little when you see it? Or do you buy the car where your head says: wait a minute, this one gives us more for the money?

Kauft man das Auto, bei dem das Herz einen kleinen Sprung macht, sobald man es sieht? Oder kauft man das Auto, bei dem der Kopf sagt: Moment mal, hier bekommen wir mehr fürs Geld?

The Renault Twingo E-Tech is clearly the heart car in this comparison. It has style, charm and personality. It feels like Renault wanted to build more than just a cheap electric city car. They wanted to bring back a feeling. And in my opinion, they succeeded.

Der Renault Twingo E-Tech ist in diesem Vergleich ganz klar das Herz Auto. Er hat Stil, Charme und Persönlichkeit. Es fühlt sich an, als wollte Renault nicht einfach nur ein günstiges elektrisches Stadtauto bauen. Sie wollten ein Gefühl zurückbringen. Und meiner Meinung nach ist ihnen das gelungen.

But the Leapmotor T03 stands there quietly and says: nice design, but look what I offer.

Aber der Leapmotor T03 steht still daneben und sagt: schönes Design, aber schau mal, was ich biete.

That is what makes this comparison so interesting. It is not simply Renault against Leapmotor. It is emotion against reason. Retro charm against price performance. A car that turns heads against a car that makes you study the offer more closely.

Genau das macht diesen Vergleich so interessant. Es ist nicht einfach Renault gegen Leapmotor. Es ist Gefühl gegen Vernunft. Retro Charme gegen Preis Leistung. Ein Auto, das Blicke sammelt, gegen ein Auto, bei dem man das Angebot genauer liest.

And maybe that is why this test drive stayed in our heads longer than expected.

Und vielleicht blieb uns genau deshalb diese Probefahrt länger im Kopf, als wir zuerst gedacht hatten.

The Twingo did not fail. Not at all. He made a strong impression. He looked great, drove through town with confidence and proved that a small electric car does not have to be boring. But for my wife, a few everyday details were not perfect. The steering, the seating position and the question of the rear view camera made her hesitate.

Der Twingo ist nicht durchgefallen. Ganz und gar nicht. Er hat einen starken Eindruck hinterlassen. Er sah klasse aus, fuhr selbstbewusst durch die Stadt und zeigte, dass ein kleines Elektroauto nicht langweilig sein muss. Aber für meine Frau waren ein paar Alltagspunkte nicht perfekt. Die Lenkung, die Sitzposition und die Frage nach der Rückfahrkamera ließen sie zögern.

And when you hesitate after a test drive, the price suddenly becomes even more important.

Und wenn man nach einer Probefahrt zögert, wird der Preis plötzlich noch wichtiger.

For us, it all comes down to one question.

Für uns läuft am Ende alles auf eine Frage hinaus.

Price performance or retro with compromise?

Preis Leistung oder Retro mit Verzicht?

The Twingo is the car you want to like. The T03 is the car you start calculating with.

Der Twingo ist das Auto, das man mögen will. Der T03 ist das Auto, bei dem man anfängt zu rechnen.

My wife was very close to falling for the little Renault. Very close. The looks, the color, the charm and the reactions on the street all worked in his favor. But a car has to do more than look good in a photo. It has to feel right every single day.

Meine Frau war sehr nah dran, sich in den kleinen Renault zu verlieben. Sehr nah. Die Optik, die Farbe, der Charme und die Blicke auf der Straße sprachen alle für ihn. Aber ein Auto muss mehr können, als auf einem Foto gut auszusehen. Es muss sich jeden Tag richtig anfühlen.

So the decision is not made yet.

Deshalb ist die Entscheidung noch nicht gefallen.

Would you follow your heart and choose the Renault Twingo E-Tech because he simply has that special spark? Or would you follow your head and take a closer look at the Leapmotor T03 because the package looks stronger for the money?
