Winter survivors

Spring is just a few weeks away. This year the temperatures have started to rise earlier than expected. This is wonderful because you can already see the colors of the vegetation and the birds are beginning to appear in greater numbers in the trees of the forest.

Today, I visited my grandmother. She is a lover of succulents and cacti. These plants have an incredible variety of species that are curious in their shapes, which makes these plants unique.

My grandmother has a mini greenhouse to protect her plants from the cold in the winter. Although succulents and cacti are plants that can withstand extreme weather, the cold can rot their roots and kill the plant.

Last spring, my grandmother succeeded in grafting two types of cactus to create a hybrid cactus. This consists of joining two types of cactus through a cut and as the days go by, these are fixed together resulting in a single beautiful specimen.

Hybrid cacti need a lot of care. They should not be exposed to temperatures above 25°C or below 10°C. Winter is therefore a survival challenge for this type of cactus.

Fortunately, hybrid cacti, along with succulents, have managed to survive the winter. My grandmother did a good job! These cacti will be fortunate to experience a spring with friendlier temperatures.

When temperatures are around 18°C, my grandmother will move these plants out of the greenhouse and into the garden to enjoy full sun and a little more frequent watering.
