Today I’m celebrating my 34th birthday. And my only reaction is to feel grateful. I’m grateful to be here, to have made it another year, for my health, and for feeling alive.
Today I’m celebrating my 34th birthday. And my only reaction is to feel grateful. I’m grateful to be here, to have made it another year, for my health, and for feeling alive.
Sometimes, we don’t appreciate the simple things until we’re faced with something serious: the simple act of breathing, laughing, walking, hugging, looking someone in the eye, loving, and being loved. Celebrating a birthday is a true gift. It’s having the privilege of continuing to accumulate days, moments, and stories. It’s having people around us who offer us their time, their company, and their affection.
Hoy no solo conmemoro mis 34 años.
And that… is something money can’t buy. I hope we never forget: that life isn’t measured by what we achieve, but by the people around us as we do it. That the real treasure isn’t in going far, but in who you go with. That the best gift isn’t a cake or a party, but every person who chooses to be with you, today and always. Today I’m not just celebrating my 34th birthday.
I’m celebrating the fact that I’m alive. That I feel emotions. That I’m lucky to still be here, learning, making mistakes, growing, and surrounded by people who enrich my life. Happy another year around the sun. And thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart, to those who walk by my side.
On my 34th birthday, I invited everyone over for dinner at six. I just asked them to arrive at 6:45; there was no need to bring gifts. At 7:12, I got a text from my sister saying that it was a long trip just for a birthday…
I turned 34. My invitation read: “Dinner starts at 6:00. No gifts, just your presence.” At 6:45, I realized no one was coming. At 7:12 p.m., I got a text from my sister: “It's too far to drive just for a birthday. I'm sorry.”
Estamos cansadas". No protesté.
My mother said, “Maybe next weekend. We're tired.” I didn't argue. I simply logged into the foundation account I'd set up two years ago to support them, deleted all the authorized users except for myself, and sent a brief email: “Starting today, I'm canceling all support. At midnight, the ATM will no longer be available.”
Mi hermana me llamó doce veces.
My sister called me twelve times. Then, a notification popped up on my phone. Its message completely changed what I did next. I had prepared her favorite meals. My mother loved my lemon chicken. My sister, Ila, always asked me for my rosemary potatoes whenever she broke up with someone. I sat at the head of the table, clenching my teeth as the food grew cold. I’d been through this before. Not at this very table, but in the same silence and the same avoidance.
The notification read: Bank transfer declined: insufficient funds. Below that was the account name: Martin Family Relief Foundation. The sender: Cheryl Martin, my mother. She had tried to transfer $3,200—the same woman who, just a few hours earlier, couldn’t drive “that far” for her son’s birthday.
At that moment, the veil was completely lifted. My role in this family had always been the same: provider, ghost, a bank with feelings. They didn’t celebrate me; they were dependent on me. Two years ago, when my father’s crisis wiped out his money, I was the one who quietly set up a fund and started sending them money every month. They called it the “family cushion.” They used it as if it were an ATM.
No recibí nada a cambio.
When Ila lost her job for the third time, I paid her rent. When Mom’s car broke down, I sent her $600 within an hour. When my cousin Devon wanted to improve his credit, I co-signed a loan. I didn’t get anything in return. Not even a thank-you note. The saddest part is that they never took the time to ask how I was doing. Not even when I was working seventy hours a week to keep my job as a senior project manager. Not even when I canceled vacations to send them emergency money. I was useful, not loved.
I checked the foundation’s transaction history. It made me feel sick to my stomach. Ila had withdrawn $1,000 three weeks ago, labeled as “professional development.” That was the weekend she posted bikini photos from Cancún saying, “Find me where the good vibes are.” Devon withdrew $500 for a “car repair.” He doesn’t have a car, but he plays poker at the casino on the highway.
Has agotado mi tiempo, mi energía, mi felicidad. He dado sin pedir. Has tomado sin límites. Con efecto inmediato, yo también retiro. La fundación se cierra. Ya no soy tu plan financiero. Feliz cumpleaños atrasado.
They hadn’t forgotten my birthday. They simply decided I wasn’t worth their time. At 1:03 a.m., I sent each of them an email. You’ve taken more than just money. You’ve drained my time, my energy, my happiness. I’ve given without asking. You have taken without limits. Effective immediately, I am withdrawing as well. The foundation is closing. I am no longer your financial plan. Happy belated birthday.
Then I turned off my phone. Tomorrow is my birthday 34 years old… I think it’s the perfect occasion to reflect, look back, and learn. To take a moment to think, because in the hustle and bustle of life, if we don’t pause, it’s very difficult to grow and improve—which is always my goal in every area. I’ve been this way my whole life; more than on New Year’s, I take stock of my life on my birthday.

I’m a very active woman, both physically and mentally; I have lots of ideas, projects, and plans, and I’m also a woman of action. This combination can be a bit explosive, since I always want everything to happen right away—you know what I mean. One of the things I’ve learned recently is to be more patient and to take the time to
