“Not one woman less, not one more death” are the words of Mexican poet and activist Susana Chávez 1974–2011 , whose murder in Ciudad Juárez sparked a movement against femicide and violence against women beginning in 2015. The exhibition, which invites visitors to reflect on discrimination against women’s roles in today’s society, includes:

at the top, it displays an image of a bomb ; the videos Everything is ok 2007 and Something wrong 2005 —by Natalia Saurin and Silvia Levenson—which directly demonstrate, based on statistics, that one of the most dangerous places for women worldwide is, ironically, their own home; the photographic series Kitchen 2008–2009 by Natalia Saurin; Famiglia e altre storie 2015 , in which Silvia Levenson reinterprets her own family album, revealing the ambiguity and secrets inherent in the concept of “family”; Natalia Saurin’s Ti amo troppo 2019–2020 , featuring vintage postcards that the artist has altered by sewing, embroidering, and inserting unexpected elements that transform the images into new visual narratives.

NOT ONE LESS: REFLECTIONS AS A WOMAN AND A RABBI We are very proud of her dedication and empathy toward victims of gender-based violence. We hope this will inspire many more people.

The sacred text clearly outlines both the positive and negative consequences of adhering to or straying from these principles. What rules are we referring to? Those that teach us to clothe the naked, to comfort the lonely, to feed the hungry, and those that promote justice, respect, equality, the sanctity of life,…

When these rules are not followed, the consequences are devastating; a cruel, sadistic, and unaccountable society is created. The choice to disregard these norms leads to a bleak landscape, and such is the discomfort caused by reading what some call divine punishment—which I prefer to call the consequences of desecrating life—that it is customary for public readings of the text in the synagogue to be done in whispers and quickly, so that our ears cannot bear the harshness of the words and the images they evoke.

Today I want to shed light on the consequences of abandoning our responsibility toward others and our respect for life. I believe that the silence has lasted so long that it has allowed attitudes to become normalized—attitudes that oppress, insult, humiliate, ignore, violate, and destroy people’s dignity. It is time to speak out again and raise awareness.

A year ago, the first mass mobilization of society made a profound impact on us by raising awareness about gender-based violence and femicides, under the slogan “Not One Less.” This year, we took to the streets again. And today, the situation is similar to—or even worse than—before. Every 30 hours, a woman is murdered in a femicide.

Therefore, what we must not do is silence our voices to avoid causing discontent. And yes, we must be willing to make people uncomfortable. As a community, as parents, as young people, as judges, as politicians, and as leaders in social, educational, and religious spheres. It is essential that we read the text aloud.

Silence is violence. Femicide begins with the silence of the family, society, the police, the education system, the justice system, and the political sphere. We need to speak out, even if it causes pain. And we must feel the pain caused by the way many people—or even we ourselves—express ourselves. When women are treated as objects

When we raise our children with a negative view of women’s role in society, treating them as mere objects of consumption. When we fail to teach our daughters that they do not belong to anyone. When, as educators, we fail to respond to the first instance of disrespect and allow humiliation to occur under the pretext that it is “culture.”

When we fail to report acts of oppression. When we look for reasons to justify violence against others. When we accept all kinds of relationships, deceiving ourselves into believing they are love, because otherwise, those people would be left alone. When, as parents, we avoid getting involved in our adolescent children’s social media accounts by managing their image and privacy.

When we, as parents, share photos of our daughters that should remain within the family. When we fail to teach our children about respect and responsibility toward others, as well as about solidarity and getting along with others.

It is not a cultural issue; it is not exclusive to young people; it does not belong to this era, nor to certain social classes. There are no natural hierarchies or inequalities based on gender. The biblical message makes this clear. And many ignore that gentle whisper that tradition asked us to listen to. It is time to raise our voices once again. To not fear terrible punishment. We have already seen that it is not heaven that unleashes wrath.
