Nature sometimes gives us gifts that dazzle our eyes not only with their colors, but also with their texture, softness, and the feeling that is deeply connected to our memories. The corn cobs that have just emerged from the body of a corn plant are a sign of this. As I was capturing this scene with my camera in hand, the image of not just a crop, but a tender time was being captured on the screen of my mind—my childhood, my playing days.

Freshly sprouted corn cobs: A story of beauty

When a corn plant reaches its full maturity, the cobs slowly start to emerge from its body. As charming as these cobs are to look at, they also have an important role in scientific and agricultural work. When the cobs are new, their color is light green, like tender leaves. Beneath that husk, the cobs hold a golden dream—the corn kernels—in their bosom.

On the top of the cob, there is a cluster of white or light brown hairs. The hairs are very thin and soft to the touch. These hairs are actually the female parts of the corn plant, which are very important for pollination. Each hair is connected to a single corn kernel. The more hairs, the fuller the kernel.

Nature and science together

The structure of the corn cob is not only beautiful to look at, but also a wonderful example of natural intelligence. The hard shell protects the corn kernel from the heat of the sun, insects, or excess moisture. The plant collects pollen through the hairs. Sometimes when a light breeze blows, those hairs sway—as if dancing to the music of nature.

Capturing a newly born corn cob on camera at this moment means not just taking a picture of a plant, but also taking a picture of a time, bearing witness to an agricultural culture.

সদ্য ফোঁটা ভুট্টা কাঁধি: এক সৌন্দর্যের উপাখ্যান

যখন ভুট্টা গাছ তার পূর্ণ যৌবনে পৌঁছায়, তখন তার শরীর থেকে ধীরে ধীরে বের হতে শুরু করে কাঁধি। এই কাঁধি গুলো দেখতে যেমন মনোমুগ্ধকর, তেমনি এর রয়েছে বৈজ্ঞানিক এবং কৃষিকাজে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা। কাঁধি যখন নতুন, তখন তার রঙ থাকে হালকা সবুজ, কোমল পাতার মতো। সেই খোসার নিচে এক একটি সোনালী স্বপ্ন—ভুট্টার দানাগুলো—বুকে ধারণ করে থাকে কাঁধি।

কাঁধির উপরের দিকে থাকে একগুচ্ছ সাদা বা হালকা বাদামি রঙের দাঁড়ি। দাঁড়িগুলো দেখতে অনেকটা সুতোর মতো চিকন এবং স্পর্শে অত্যন্ত কোমল। এই দাঁড়িগুলো আসলে ভুট্টা গাছের স্ত্রী ফুলের অংশ, যেগুলো পরাগায়নের জন্য খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। প্রতিটি দাঁড়ির সঙ্গে একটি করে ভুট্টা দানার সংযোগ থাকে। দাঁড়ি যত বেশি, দানা তত বেশি পূর্ণ হয়।

Playing with corn stalks in childhood memories

Seeing these stalks reminds me of my childhood. When corn harvest time came in the village, we would run to the fields. We would tear off the stalks of the newly emerged corn stalks and make various toys—someone's hair, some's mustache, and sometimes small structures. There was no technology behind it, no mobile or internet—there was only nature, our imagination, and the soft touch of those stalks.

Today, when I look at the picture of that stalk, it is not just a piece of corn, but as if I have returned to a time—where there was a carefree life, the smell of the soil, running on wet grass, and playing in the afternoon breeze.

Importance and time of corn cultivation

Corn is an important food grain in various countries of the world, including Bangladesh. It is not only used for eating, but also as a raw material for animal feed, oil, and industries. The structure of the corn cob, the completeness of the kernels, and the presence of the husk are all indications to the farmer—whether a good harvest is coming or not. A healthy cob means a successful season.

Farmers know that when the cobs emerge, it is very important to take care of the plant. If the right amount of water, fertilizer, and protection is not given, the kernels remain incomplete. As a result, farmers can get instructions on the health of the plant by observing the development of the cobs.

Moments preserved through photography

The context of this blog is a special moment captured by my camera—a newly born corn cob, with a childlike softness on its body and a colorful hope for the future in its eyes. When the light falls on the cob, every fiber of the husk turns golden. Many people only look for the beauty of the image when doing such photography, I look for the feeling. In every thread of that husk, I find the smell of my soil, the carefree time of childhood, and the hard work of the farmer.

আমার ছোটবেলার কথা মনে পড়ে যায় এই দাঁড়িগুলো দেখলে। গ্রামে যখন ভুট্টার সময় আসত, আমরা ছুটে যেতাম ক্ষেতের দিকে। সবে বের হওয়া ভুট্টার কাঁধির দাঁড়িগুলো ছিঁড়ে এনে বানাতাম নানা রকম খেলনা—কারও চুল, কারও গোঁফ, আবার কখনো ছোট ছোট গাঁথনি। পেছনে ছিল না কোনো প্রযুক্তি, ছিল না মোবাইল বা ইন্টারনেট—ছিল শুধু প্রকৃতি, আমাদের কল্পনা আর সেই দাড়িগুলোর নরম ছোঁয়া।

আজ যখন সেই কাঁধির ছবির দিকে তাকাই, তখন শুধু এক টুকরো ভুট্টা নয়, যেন ফিরে পাই একটি সময়কে—যেখানে ছিল অবলীলায় বাঁচা, মাটির গন্ধ, ভেজা ঘাসে দৌড় আর বিকেলের হাওয়ায় খেলা।

বাংলাদেশসহ বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশে ভুট্টা একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ খাদ্যশস্য। এটি শুধু খাওয়ার জন্য নয়, পশুখাদ্য, তেল ও শিল্পকারখানার কাঁচামাল হিসেবেও ব্যবহৃত হয়। ভুট্টার কাঁধির গঠন, দানা পরিপূর্ণতা এবং দাঁড়ির উপস্থিতি কৃষকের জন্য একটি ইঙ্গিত—ভালো ফলন আসছে কি না। একটি স্বাস্থ্যবান কাঁধির মানে একটি সফল মৌসুম।

In today's modern era, we are very much separated from nature. Our daily lives are busy and mechanized. As a result, we cannot experience many things without losing our direct connection with nature. One example of this is corn. In urban life, corn may mean cooked corn kernels, popcorn, or corn flour. But when a raw corn cob peeks out from the tree in the middle of nature, it is difficult to describe in words the beauty that is captured.

The structure of the corn plant is an extraordinary work of nature. When the cob grows, it is covered with a green husk, like a natural wrapper. The small grains arranged in rows under that husk are the result of nature's perfect plan. Each grain has a delicate silky beard, which sways in the wind and creates a wonderful scene. This beard is not only for beauty, but it is also necessary for pollination, which helps in the growth of new grains.

Nature has given the corn plant a complete form—food, shelter, and beauty—from three aspects. Not only for humans, but birds, insects, and even small animals find the rhythm of life centered around the corn plant.
