Here I am again, sharing fragments of this human experience I’m so passionate about dissecting. Those who follow me know I love telling stories: sometimes they are tales, sometimes real-life experiences, and other times reflections born after a good cup of coffee and an intense reading session. Today, after interacting with the community and replying to comments, something came to mind that I had kept locked away for decades.
As a child, I went through something that terrified me. A “crazy thing”—as I called it at eight years old—something I never dared to tell even my own parents.
Has it ever happened to you? You go to sleep, and in the middle of the night, you wake up only to discover you are a prisoner in your own body. You are fully conscious, yet you cannot move a single finger. You feel a heavy pressure on your chest, as if the air refuses to enter, and a sensation—sometimes accompanied by a dark presence in a corner of the room—that makes your skin crawl.
You try to scream, but your voice gets stuck. It is, quite literally, a nightmare with your eyes open.
Later, as an adult, I did some research and discovered it has a name: sleep paralysis. But the curious thing about my case is how the story ends. While most people do everything possible to avoid it, I ended up becoming “friends” with that sensation.
I don't even know how it happened, but over time, I began to decipher its signals. I learned not to fight against it, but rather to move within that state. There came a point when I could come and go at will, as if I had found a secret passageway between this world and the realm of dreams. All it took was closing my eyes, letting go of control, and trusting the process—and there was the “portal,” opening up.
I had moved past fear and found a sense of fascination instead.
Today—I admit this with a laugh—I can’t do it anymore. I’ve tried to recreate it, but perhaps I’ve lost the touch, or maybe an adult mind simply doesn't disconnect with that magical ease of childhood. Yet, whenever I think back on it, I smile. It’s incredible to think that, as a child, I managed to tame that “monster” and turn it into my own mental amusement park!
I believe childhood fears are more than just fleeting scares; they are gateways. If we dare to step through them instead of running away, we discover corners of ourselves we never knew existed. It’s like a dormant power waiting for us to dare and tap into it. Once you learn to manage it, you end up doing things with your mind that seem like science fiction.
Has anything similar happened to you? Did you ever manage to take the reins of an experience that once paralyzed you?
I’d love to hear how you navigate these internal processes, so let me know in the comments. </div
