DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE The lifelong marital union between a man and a woman is a historic norm within Christianity, grounded in the entirety of Scripture.

DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE The lifelong marital union between a man and a woman is a historic norm within Christianity, grounded in the entirety of Scripture. The Assemblies of God value marriage so highly that they accept divorce only under a limited number of exceptions justified by the Bible.

Where divorce is accepted, the possibility of remarriage is also permitted. Even in the absence of such exceptions, Christians who have divorced and remarried are part of God’s people and should be treated as members of the body of Christ.

In the United States, lifelong marriages are no longer the norm. A recent study indicates that about one-third of Americans who are or have been married have experienced at least one divorce. Among those who identify as evangelical Christians, 25 percent have gone through a divorce.

Large segments of the population live in households headed by single parents, divorced parents, or parents who have never been married. Many more are in temporary relationships based on convenience or fear of legal complications. In short, today, many people do not follow God’s plan for the family, intimate relationships, and raising children.

The Church must address the issues surrounding divorce and remarriage, which arise frequently. Christians often find it difficult to determine how their commitment to Christ should shape their perspective on marriage, divorce, and remarriage.

The Testimony of Scripture On Marriage Marriage unites two genders—male and female—who share the image of God. Both men and women are biologically essential for having children and multiplying, so that humanity may manifest God’s authority on earth Genesis 1:27, 28 .

The union between the two genders must be a reciprocal relationship. When God placed man in the Garden of Eden to tend it, He saw that it was not good for him to be alone. God created an equal companion to work with him as an ezer kenegdo, which translates as “helper opposite” Genesis 2:18 .

Ezer is a Hebrew term that can refer to a “helper,” “ally,” or “rescuer.” In the Old Testament, it is most frequently used to describe God. Kenegdo is a Hebrew word that can be interpreted as “in front of” or “facing.” It describes being face to face or looking directly into someone’s eyes. In this context, ezer kenegdo does not imply being an “inferior partner,” but rather a “corresponding ally.” The man immediately recognized in the woman his equal in relation to other living beings Genesis 2:19–23 .

Marriage represents a vital union between two genders. The account of how woman was created shows that marriage is the moment when a man leaves his parents’ home to become “one flesh” with his spouse Genesis 2:24 . Jesus spoke of this union, saying, “What God has joined together, let no one separate” Matthew 19:6 .

Marriage is understood as a covenant. It is a serious and binding commitment established before God and among members of society. The description of marriage in Genesis 2:24 clearly indicates its essence. However, Malachi 2:14 also defines it as a covenant. Furthermore, Ezekiel 16:8 extends the concept of marriage to the covenantal relationship that exists between God and Israel.

Marriage is a commitment between a man and a woman. Although the roles of men and women vary by culture, the most important distinction between them lies in their biology and reproduction. Only women can say, “With the Lord’s help, I have given birth to another human being” Genesis 4:1 . The physical differences between men and women do not negate the equal responsibility they share in their marriage.

The purpose of sexual intimacy within marriage is procreation, union, and mutual pleasure within a safe and loving relationship. Paul taught couples to maintain respect in their sexual relationship 1 Corinthians 7:3–5 .

According to the Bible, marriage begins and ends with monogamy. The first family narrative centers on a man and a woman. Some later chose polygamy, but the resulting family experience was never optimal e.g., Genesis 21:9, 10; 37:2–36; 1 Samuel 1:1–8 . Comparing Israel’s relationship as “a people of one God” with the institution of marriage e.g., Isaiah 54:5, Hosea 3:1 led to an emphasis on “monogamous marriage” during the New Testament period.

In the Church, Paul established monogamy as the standard for leaders by referring to a “husband of one wife” 1 Timothy 3:2, 12; Titus 1:6 . Paul viewed marriage as analogous to the relationship between Christ and the Church Ephesians 5:21–33 . The spouses’ loyalty to each other’s well-being reflects the community that was reconciled through Christ’s death and for which He will return.

With regard to divorce, God considered this act to be harmful Malachi 2:14–16 . Divorce was not part of God’s original purpose for humanity. Intentionally breaking the marriage covenant interferes with God’s plans for marriage.

Divine law established the rules for divorce. This law recognized that divorce was common in Israel. At that time, women were subject to the control of men. A husband could leave his wife for no reason, and she had no legal recourse, which often led her into poverty or prostitution. The Old Testament laws on divorce served as an essential safeguard against abuse.
