I am very happy and excited to share with you what my pastoral experience in Latin America—specifically in Guatemala, where I am completing my formation at the Congregational Juniorate—has meant to me.

Me alegra mucho y siento un gran entusiasmo en compartir con ustedes lo que ha significado para mí mi experiencia pastoral en América Latina, específicamente en Guatemala, donde estoy realizando mi formación en el Juniorado Congregacional. He llegado a entender que el lugar donde conectamos con Dios está presente en todas las vivencias de la condición humana.

I am very happy and excited to share with you what my pastoral experience in Latin America—specifically in Guatemala, where I am completing my formation at the Congregational Juniorate—has meant to me. I have come to understand that the place where we connect with God is present in all aspects of the human condition.

Es esencial que estemos atentas a escuchar y a compartir con las personas más vulnerables sus ilusiones, sus momentos felices y sus dificultades, lo que nos lleva a reconocer la presencia divina en nuestra historia.

It is essential that we be attentive to listening to and sharing with the most vulnerable people their hopes, their happy moments, and their struggles, which leads us to recognize the divine presence in our history.

Entre las actividades pastorales que llevo a cabo, una de ellas se realiza en nuestra escuela "Nueva Vida", donde disfruto de los conocimientos y las sonrisas de los niños durante la catequesis. Ellos aprenden de mí y yo también adquiero conocimientos a través de ellos al intercambiar ideas, saberes y experiencias sobre Dios y sobre nuestros semejantes. Among the pastoral activities I carry out, one takes place at our “Nueva Vida” school, where I enjoy the children’s enthusiasm and smiles during catechism class. They learn from me, and I, too, gain knowledge from them as we exchange ideas, insights, and experiences about God and our fellow human beings.

También trabajo con los jóvenes que fueron alumnos de nuestra escuela y que continúan su educación en otras instituciones; son adolescentes que a veces sienten vergüenza y timidez al expresar sus pensamientos y participar en las reuniones. Juntos enfrentamos estos desafíos aprendiendo y promoviendo valores y virtudes, para que puedan construir un futuro mejor y ser buenas personas en la comunidad y, especialmente, en sus hogares.

I also work with young people who were once students at our school and are now continuing their education at other institutions; they are teenagers who sometimes feel embarrassed or shy about expressing their thoughts and participating in meetings. Together, we tackle these challenges by learning and promoting values and virtues, so that they can build a better future and be good people in the community—and especially in their homes.

Además, participo en la pastoral con migrantes, muchos de los cuales aspiran a llegar a América del Norte en busca de un mejor estilo de vida o como refugiados debido a las difíciles circunstancias en sus países. Durante su trayecto enfrentan múltiples desafíos y un sinfín de peligros e inseguridad, cruzando bosques y ríos en busca de una vida más equilibrada en Estados Unidos. Realizamos nuestra labor con ellos a través de la Red Jesuita con migrantes en la Casa Myrna Mack, donde ofrecemos ayuda en la cocina y en la organización del lugar, ya que muchos pasan por ahí para recibir atención inicial y, sobre todo, buscan algo para comer. Escuchar sus relatos y experiencias no es sencillo, ya que son personas que sufren, sin hogar, que caminan sin saber lo que les depara el futuro. Para ellos, compartir sus historias con nosotras es una forma de aliviar su carga y sentirse escuchados y respetados. Lo que más me sorprende es que, a pesar de sus difíciles situaciones, siempre hay sonrisas en sus rostros y la alegría de vivir. Con ellos aprendo mucho y reconozco el rostro de Cristo sufriente, que optó por estar con nosotras aquí, en esta tierra, compartiendo nuestra condición humana.

Listening to their stories and experiences isn’t easy, since they are people who are suffering, who are homeless, and who walk without knowing what the future holds for them. For them, sharing their stories with us is a way to lighten their burden and feel heard and respected. What surprises me most is that, despite their difficult situations, there are always smiles on their faces and a joy for life. I learn a great deal from them and recognize the face of the suffering Christ, who chose to be with us here on this earth, sharing in our human condition.

La vida en una comunidad intercultural y el hecho de vivir como hermanas en una misma familia congregacional me han inspirado en gran medida, ya que es una oportunidad para que nosotras mismas nos enriquezcamos con nuestros diversos talentos, virtudes y culturas de las cuales venimos. Además, me benefician los estudios de teología que estoy cursando en la Universidad Landívar.

Life in an intercultural community and the experience of living as sisters within the same congregational family have been a great source of inspiration to me, as it gives us the opportunity to enrich one another with our diverse talents, virtues, and the cultures from which we come. In addition, I am benefiting from the theology studies I am pursuing at Landívar University.

Finalizo aquí la narración de esta breve vivencia en la misión y el trabajo pastoral en Guatemala, pidiendo a María, Madre de Dios y nuestra madre, que mantenga su mirada sobre nuestras vidas y que nunca nos abandone en esta gran misión que nos fue encomendada por nuestros fundadores.

I conclude here my account of this brief experience of mission and pastoral work in Guatemala, asking Mary, Mother of God and our mother, to keep her gaze upon our lives and never to abandon us in this great mission entrusted to us by our founders.

What It's Really Like to Be a Catholic Missionary In June, my husband, four friends, and I arrived at the San Lucas Mission in Guatemala, exhausted but wide-eyed after a long trip and some terrifying experiences on the bus ride from the airport.

Guatemala era completamente diferente a nuestras vidas en los suburbios de Columbus, Ohio, y las vistas y olores eran impresionantes mientras caminábamos desde nuestro humilde hotel con una maravillosa vista hasta la polvorienta biblioteca de la misión para cenar. Guatemala was completely different from our lives in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio, and the sights and smells were breathtaking as we walked from our modest hotel—which had a wonderful view—to the dusty mission library for dinner. The six of us were one of the youngest groups there. Perhaps because of our youth, or for other reasons, during our stay we got to know many of the long-term volunteers LTVs .

Como no estaba del todo preparada para la vida misionera y mi primera experiencia me había cambiado por completo, tenía curiosidad por conocer más sobre aquellos que habían sido llamados a vivir esta vida misionera durante meses o incluso años.

Since I wasn't entirely prepared for missionary life and my first experience had completely changed me, I was curious to learn more about those who had been called to live this missionary life for months or even years.

Justo cuando comenzaba a adaptarme al duro trabajo y la vida sencilla de San Lucas, Abby, Hannah y Cecilia de LTV se ofrecieron a sentarse una noche después de cenar y responder mis dudas sobre su labor. Siempre había tenido interés en la vida de una misionera y sentía el llamado a ayudar a personas en todo el mundo, pero quería que estas mujeres me contaran cómo es realmente ser LTV.

Just as I was beginning to adjust to the hard work and simple life in San Lucas, Abby, Hannah, and Cecilia from LTV offered to sit down with me one evening after dinner and answer my questions about their work. I had always been interested in the life of a missionary and felt called to help people around the world, but I wanted these women to tell me what it’s really like to be part of LTV.

"Nunca había planeado ser misionera a largo plazo. Me convertí en voluntaria", me comentó Hannah. "Estoy aquí desde hace casi 9 meses, y mi plan inicial era quedarme solo 6 meses, así es como suceden las cosas". Había trabajado un año después de terminar la universidad y no le había satisfecho, por lo que decide actuar cuando sintió el llamado del Espíritu Santo a explorar el trabajo misionero.

“I never planned to be a long-term missionary. I became a volunteer,” Hannah told me. “I've been here for almost 9 months, and my original plan was to stay only 6 months—that's just how things turn out.” She had worked for a year after graduating from college and wasn't satisfied with it, so she decided to take action when she felt the Holy Spirit's call to explore missionary work.

Es importante mencionar que la mayoría de los LTV son estudiantes y recién licenciados que dedican su tiempo aquí antes de aplicar a escuelas de medicina o programas de posgrado. Son desarrolladores de software, trabajadores sociales y emprendedores. No reciben salario durante su tiempo en la misión y pagan 100 dólares al mes para compartir una habitación en una casa con otros LTV.

It is important to note that most LTVs are students and recent graduates who spend their time here before applying to medical school or graduate programs. They are software developers, social workers, and entrepreneurs. They do not receive a salary during their time at the mission and pay $100 a month to share a room in a house with other LTVs.

Cecilia y Abby compartieron su deseo de servir después de reflexionar sobre sus propias vidas en Estados Unidos en comparación con sus experiencias en viajes breves. Cecilia se quedará al menos un año en San Lucas sin planes de regresar a EE. UU., mientras que Abby volverá en otoño para comenzar la universidad en la Universidad Estatal de Ohio. Cecilia and Abby shared their desire to serve after reflecting on their own lives in the United States compared to their experiences during short trips. Cecilia will stay in San Lucas for at least a year with no plans to return to the U.S., while Abby will return in the fall to begin college at Ohio State University. Cecilia highlighted the distinction between “attending” and “serving.” “When we ‘attend,’ we place ourselves above others. When we ‘serve,’ we work alongside them.”
