El sentido y la fuerza de la poesía En mis años veinte, entre todas las posibilidades que tenía para mi futuro, opté por estudiar literatura, y específicamente poesía. ¿Por qué razón? La literatura no iba a hacer mi vida más fácil ni a enriquecerme, pero estaba convencido de su poder enriquecedor, tan esencial como el alimento. Y esa convicción se mantiene. Escogí la poesía porque ofrecía diferentes maneras de ser y de conectar con los demás.

The Meaning and Power of Poetry In my twenties, among all the possibilities I had for my future, I chose to study literature—and specifically, poetry. Why? Literature wasn’t going to make my life easier or make me rich, but I was convinced of its enriching power, which is as essential as food. And that conviction remains. I chose poetry because it offered different ways of being and of connecting with others.

La poesía nos permite estar más atentos, más conscientes, más vivos. Nos ayuda a reconocer nuestro lugar actual y también a visualizar hacia dónde deseamos dirigirnos. La poesía nos acompaña, nos localiza en nuestro presente y nos orienta en nuestros próximos pasos. En mi propia experiencia, la poesía ha sido una presencia constante. He creado versos en mis circunstancias más sombrías y en las más alegres. Así que aquí creo que se encuentran algunos de los principales objetivos, ventajas, placeres y poderes de la poesía:

Poetry allows us to be more attentive, more aware, more alive. It helps us recognize where we are now and also envision where we want to go. Poetry accompanies us, anchors us in the present, and guides us in our next steps. In my own experience, poetry has been a constant presence. I’ve written verses during both my darkest and my happiest moments. So I believe that here lie some of the main purposes, benefits, pleasures, and powers of poetry:

Enfoque A diferencia de la prosa, la poesía nos motiva a observar el lenguaje, no solo línea tras línea o palabra por palabra, sino sílaba por sílaba, sonido por sonido. Focus Unlike prose, poetry encourages us to examine language—not just line by line or word by word, but syllable by syllable, sound by sound. Poetic rhythms and musicality require us to listen, to engage our senses, and to become aware of how we understand the message. Similarly, short lines and the pauses between them invite us to pause and reflect. Poetry asks us not to rush through it, but to enjoy the experience of reading. It invites us to be fully present.

This slowing down, this act of focusing, is, as the philosopher Simone Weil notes, a sacred act: “Attention, taken to its highest degree, is equivalent to prayer. It involves faith and love… Pure attention is prayer.”

Al entrenar nuestra mente para concentrarnos, como un poema puede ayudarnos a hacer, entramos naturalmente en una relación sagrada, lo que otro pensador, Martin Buber, define como la relación "Yo-Tú".

By training our minds to focus—as a poem can help us do—we naturally enter into a sacred relationship, which another thinker, Martin Buber, defines as the “I-You” relationship.

Connection Attention naturally fosters connection. For example, when we focus on language, we see that it takes on meaning based on tradition, perception, and experience.

En un poema, la forma y el contenido están profundamente interconectados. Un poema transmite exactamente lo que dice a través de su manera de estar escrito. A word has a different meaning in relation to other words; rhythms exist only in relation to other rhythms and sounds. In a poem, form and content are deeply intertwined. A poem conveys exactly what it says through the way it is written. It may seem simplistic to speak of the “form” and “content” of a text, but in truth, the two are inseparable; form represents content, and content manifests itself in form.

Esto es similar a la oposición entre mente y cuerpo. This is similar to the opposition between mind and body. Although it may be useful to think of the mind and body as separate entities, in reality, science and our perception tell us that “mind” and “body” are merely terms that refer to parts of our experience that are, in fact, inseparable. In the same way, the meaning of a poem arises from the connections formed between the world we live in, the written words, their relationship, and the reader. The ability to read and write poetry is tied to the practice itself.

Nuevas posibilidades A través de cómo un poema nos enseña a permanecer conectados, surgen nuevas oportunidades. La atención cuidadosa que requiere un poema lleva a una comprensión más profunda. Cuanta más atención le damos, más respeto y admiración sentimos.

New Possibilities New opportunities arise from the way a poem teaches us to stay connected. The careful attention a poem requires leads to a deeper understanding. The more attention we give it, the more respect and admiration we feel.

Nos orientamos, como menciona Weil, hacia la oración. Incluso cuando lo que observamos es complicado, percibimos la relación entre lo específico y lo divino, lo pequeño y lo grande, lo que podemos conocer y lo que no. As Weil mentions, we turn toward prayer. Even when what we observe is complex, we perceive the relationship between the specific and the divine, the small and the great, what we can know and what we cannot. By focusing on these relationships, we begin to notice the spaces that open up between things, between words, in that silence, in that realm of mystery and potential.

This space of opportunity is where creative energy—that sacred spark—resides. Poetry leads us into this space through the attention it demands of us. By devoting time to a poem—on its own terms—we step out of the left hemisphere and enter the creative, imaginative space of the right hemisphere. This space is also the realm of dreams, the subconscious, myth, and the spirit. And that space is also where change takes place.

La poesía representa el espacio donde surge nuestro grito más profundo: la pena, el traumatismo, el sufrimiento físico, todo esto está presente en ese espacio y frecuentemente va más allá del idioma. Poetry is the space where our deepest cry emerges: grief, trauma, physical suffering—all of this is present in that space and often transcends language. Furthermore, poetry is the realm of our greatest happiness, of our romantic longing, of our affection, and of the very realm of the sacred, mysticism, and awe.

Curiosamente, las vivencias más profundas nos llevan por encima de las palabras. A la vez, la cuidadosa atención al lenguaje que promueve la poesía nos dirige hacia lo no verbal, el vacío entre las palabras y la sabiduría que proviene de no verbalizar. Interestingly, our most profound experiences take us beyond words. At the same time, the careful attention to language that poetry fosters leads us toward the nonverbal—the space between words and the wisdom that comes from not putting things into words. In my own experience, my verses served as a means of expressing my traumas before I fully understood them. They were a refuge for healing. In poetry, we have the opportunity to encounter the sacred, connect with what is truly meaningful, and reconnect with beauty, meaning, and happiness.

“Speak the truth, but do so indirectly,” noted the famous Emily Dickinson. Often, that very indirectness in a poem can reveal reality with greater clarity. Every act of writing is an adventure of discovery, and this is especially true of poetry. The form of the poem allows us to free ourselves from our preconceptions about how to communicate or reflect on things and invites us to explore new ways and meanings.
